XTE J1118+480: Clues on the Nature of the Accretion Flow from the Optical Variability
نویسندگان
چکیده
We show how the simultaneous presence of a strong quasi periodic oscillation (QPO) of period ∼10 seconds in the optical and X-ray lightcurves of the X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 can be used to obtain information about the nature of the accretion flow around the source. The unusually high optical-to-X-ray flux ratio and the QPO observed simultaneously in both energy bands suggest that a significant fraction of the optical flux might originate close to the central source, where most of the X-rays are produced and be indicative of a magnetically dominated corona. We also show how the temporal evolution of the QPO can provide us with information on both the inner radius and the viscous properties of the optically thick accretion disc.

An accretion-jet model for black hole binaries: Interpreting the spectral and timing features of XTE J1118+480
Multiwavelength observations of the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 have offered abundant spectral and timing information about the source and have thus provided serious challenges to theoretical models. We propose a coupled accretion-jet model to interpret the observations. We model the accretion flow as an outer standard thin accretion disk truncated at a transition radius by an inner h...
متن کاملMultiwavelength observations revealing the evolution of the outburst of the black hole XTE J1118+480
We report multiwavelength observations of the soft X-ray transient XTE J1118+480, which we observed with UKIRT, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), RXTE, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and many other instruments and facilities. Adding radio (Ryle Telescope, VLA), submillimetre (JCMT) and X-ray (Chandra and SAX) data from the literature, we assembled the most complete spectral energy distribution...
متن کاملFurther evidence for variable synchrotron emission in XTE J1118+480 in outburst
We present simultaneous multicolor infrared and optical photometry of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 during its short 2005 January outburst, supported by simultaneous X-ray observations. The variability is dominated by short timescales, 10 s, although a weak superhump also appears to be present in the optical. The optical rapid variations, at least, are well correlated with those ...

The simultaneous presence of a strong quasi periodic oscillation of period ∼10 seconds in the optical and X-ray lightcurves of the X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 suggests that a significant fraction of the optical flux originates from the inner part of the accretion flow, where most of the X-rays are produced. We present a model of magnetic flares in an accretion disc corona where thermal cyclo-...
متن کاملMultiwavelength Observations Revealing the Outbursts of the Two Soft X-ray Transients Xte J1859+226 and Xte J1118+480
We report here on multiwavelength observations of the two new soft X-ray transients (SXTs) XTE J1859+226 and XTE J1118+480, which we observed with HST/RXTE/UKIRT. For XTE J1118+480 we also used EUVE since it is located at a very high galactic latitude and suffers from very low extinction. The two sources exhibited very different behaviour. XTE J1859+226 seems quite normal and therefore a good o...
